As a business success strategy this may seem odd at first but from the outset you need to have a clear idea of what your exit strategy will be and then work towards getting to the stage when you can implement that strategy.
If your business relies on your presence you don’t have a successful business. You simply have another job. Now, just because you have an exit strategy doesn’t mean that you have to put it into action. However, having such a strategy gives you flexibility.
Business Strategy
Your exit strategy may involve your selling the company, being able to take an extended leave of absence or walking away from it altogether. One individual who has done this is Derek Gehl.

You love running a spa business because you get to make people feel great. That’s gratifying. There’s no sweeter sound than a client coming out and exclaiming how great they feel from your services.
Yet, running a spa business isn’t all about pampering. You have to administer a lot of tasks and this takes time. It also costs you money because your spa business earns money when working with clients – not administrating your business.
Business Management
The more time and resources you put into administrative tasks and the less time pampering clients means less money in and more money out.
The simplest and most cost-effective way to dramatically reduce the amount of time you spend administrating your spa business is using the right spa scheduling and business management software.

As part of my consulting practice, I read and review business plans written both for venture capitalists and for grant applications. The weakest part of every business plan is always how will the company get from today to “the dream” five years out.
Usually, there is a pretty good description of what will happen in the next six months and a decent description of what will happen in five years, but there is nothing in between.

Technical entrepreneurs have a good handle on what product development they need to do to get the product into a usable form. They understand the costs and the time involved. However, once the product is developed, they seem to be at a loss as to what to do next.

Exposure to strategy concepts alters the way one looks at businesses. Strategic thinking involves a comprehensive analysis of a business in relation to its industry, its competitors and the business environment in both the short and the long term.
Ultimately, strategy is a company’s plan to achieve its goals.

Corporate managements often do not know clearly what they want or how they’ll get there. For example, if the question posed is which way do I go from here and the answer is it depends on where you want to go, then if the resulting answer is I don’t really care then the ultimate conversation finisher could be then it does not matter which way you go.

I desperately was looking for a business to conduct in my home after being a stay at home mom for 12 years. I was not getting any call backs on my resume in this tough economy. I have my 4 year degree in History of Art, and I have a successful sales background too. I was looking for a business that would tap into my creativity and love of research. The hunt for a business did not come easy. In fact after a few failed ventures in MLM’s and Health Insurance I learned about virtual author assisting. The key was to never give up. I always knew something was out there for me, especially in this virtual age. So, I thought to get what I want, I will have to do it myself even if that means starting my own business.
